This set of flashcards and accompanying audio CD will help you learn to recognize and pronounce the Sanskrit names of 101 classical yoga postures, or asanas.

The postures are arranged in nine different sections: standing poses, forward bends, sitting and supine poses, inversions, poses which tone and strengthen the abdominal and lumbar regions, twists, backbends, strength and balance postures, and advanced poses which illustrate the art of yoga.

Although this kit is intended to serve primarily as a guide to the pronunciation and meaning of the Sanskrit terms, it also includes implications for your personal practice.

Even though you may now practice only a few of the 101 postures given here, studying all of the names will give you amore complete picture of yogas vast scope. In time you may find yourself going further and deeper into the world of yoga than you ever imagined possible.

The postures are presented in the order generally recommended by Shri BKS Iyengar.

Why Learn the Sanskrit Names of the postures?

Sanskrit is the language used by the ancient sages who first developed the yoga tradition thousands of years ago in India. It is a language of exceptional power and precision. To understand and use the Sanskrit words is to align ourselves more closely with the source of yoga and imbue our practice with the original vigor of the tradition. Furthermore, the Sanskrit names of the posters provide yoga students around the world with a common language. Anything which helps us to communicate more clearly and transcend our sense of separateness is valuable in this time of global confusion and fragmentation.
